BabyCenter Declares 2015 "The Year Of The Gender-Neutral Baby"
Data Shows Neutral Names Are Gaining Popularity; Suggests a Cultural Shift Is Under Way
SAN FRANCISCO, June 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Halfway through 2015, BabyCenter®, the #1 pregnancy and parenting digital resource, is tracking an emerging trend among new parents: the rise of gender-neutral baby names. According to the nearly 185,000 baby names registered on BabyCenter so far this year, neutral names are on the rise compared to 2014. Among the biggest movers and shakers are:
- Amari (+56% for girls, +22% for boys)
- Karter (+130% for girls, +17% for boys)
- Phoenix (+6% for girls, +32% for boys)
- Quinn (+26% for girls, +8% for boys)
- Reese (+31% for girls, +13% for boys)
- River (+14% for girls, +40% for boys)
- Rory (+20% for girls, +24% for boys)
- Rowan (+40% for girls, +24% for boys)
- Sawyer (+8% for girls, +7% for boys)
- Taylor (+14% for girls, 3% for boys)
"As usual, baby names are reflecting a larger cultural shift," said Linda Murray, BabyCenter Global Editor in Chief. "Millennials are an open-minded and accepting group, and they don't want their children to feel pressured to conform to stereotypes that might be restrictive. Just as companies have started making more neutral kids' clothes, and taking 'boy' and 'girl' labels off toys, an increasing number of parents are choosing unisex names."
To address this growing interest, BabyCenter has a list of gender-neutral baby name ideas. For more information on this trend, visit http://blogs.babycenter.com/mom_stories/proof-that-2015-is-20150622the-year-of-the-gender-neutral-baby/.
Later this year, BabyCenter will announce the results of its highly anticipated annual Baby Names Survey and the Top 100 Baby Names of 2015.
