Avocados Are Set To Be Big Game Food MVP With A Record 270 Million Expected To Be Consumed
Americans are Encouraged to Show Their Avocado Adoration in #GuacGoal World Record Attempt
MISSION VIEJO, Calif., Jan. 5, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Big Game is America's annual celebration of football, comical commercials, and in more recent years, epic food spreads. Consumers are expected to go all-in for this year's 50th championship game in San Francisco, and celebrating America's favorite pastime wouldn't be complete without fresh avocados. In 2016, Big Game partiers are predicted to consume over 139 million pounds of the fruit (yep, it's a fruit) during the week's festivities. Given that Americans are eating a record number of avocados for the occasion, it's only fitting that the Hass Avocado Board simultaneously wants to set a record of a different sort: the world's largest online photo album of guacamole goodness created by fans and foodies sharing their avocado-filled football feasts with #GuacGoal.
Fresh avocado consumption leading up to the Big Game is expected to reach a record 278 million avocados – a 13 percent increase over last year. That's heavier than 8,000 times the weight of a San Francisco cable car, enough to cover the entire length of the Golden Gate Bridge over 300 times at one foot high, and enough to fill a football field end zone to end zone over 53 feet high – 8 feet over the goal posts. Whether they're the foundation of addicting dips like guacamole or adding creamy freshness to burgers or sliders, avocados add an epicurean element to game day feasts and bring even the staunchest foodies and sports fanatics together for the Big Game.
The Hass Avocado Board is asking Americans for help in setting the world record for the 'world's largest online photo album of people dipping food'. To help set this new world record, Americans across the country can simply snap a photo of guacamole dips and dishes they're enjoying and share it on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google+, Vine or Flickr using #GuacGoal from January 22 to February 7. In addition to the thrill of being part of this history-making attempt, people participating will be entered for a chance to win a grand prize of $500, two runner-up prizes of $250, and one of seven footballs signed by Joe Montana. To see how fellow avocado lovers enjoy their guac during Big Game festivities, visit the online photo gallery at www.loveonetoday.com/guacgoal starting January 15.
In addition to some photo fun, the Hass Avocado Board is partnering with FOODBEAST, a leading online source for food news, information and entertainment, to provide Americans with fresh, innovative and simple party ideas to take this year's Big Game celebration up a notch. This includes three original dishes developed by the FOODBEAST kitchen and shared with their millions of loyal followers.
In 2015, Americans consumed 123 million pounds or approximately 246 million avocados during Big Game week. More than 95 percent of all avocados sold in the United States are the Hass variety – which contain naturally good fats and are cholesterol free.
