Author Solutions, Inc. Declares This 'The Best Time in History to Be an Author'
Self-Publishing Leader Releases New Whitepaper on the State of the Industry
BLOOMINGTON, Ind., May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Author Solutions, Inc., the world leader in indie book publishing, has released its latest industry white paper titled "The Best Time in History to Be an Author," written by Keith Ogorek, self-published author and ASI senior vice president of marketing. Ogorek wrote the white paper in response to Bowker's recent release of 2009 new-titles figures.
Ogorek wrote: "Until recently, the goal of getting published was beset with a long, arduous road filled with rejection and delays, and, in most cases, never actually ending up with a published book. It was tough to be an author. But times have changed. Advancements in technology and changes in consumer shopping habits over the past ten years have made it possible for more writers to become published authors than ever before, making this the best time in history to be an author."
Bowker, which issues ISBNs for all U.S. titles that are brought to market, reported that while traditional book production remained relatively flat in 2009, non-traditional titles soared 181 percent. These titles include public-domain titles produced by on-demand printers, as well as self-published titles and micro-niche publications. All this expansion didn't just benefit authors; readers had more choice as titles released for the year topped 1 million for the first time ever.
"The proliferation and improvement of three technologies - desktop publishing, digital printing and increased Internet access - over the last 15 years have made the indie book publishing revolution possible. It's the true democratization of an industry, in that a once-closed society is now open to all. There's no turning back now; authors have the freedom to publish because the tools and infrastructure are available and affordable," said Ogorek.
ASI continued to lead the revolution in 2009, bringing to market more than 20,000 new titles through its AuthorHouse, iUniverse, Trafford Publishing and Xlibris imprints. In addition, ASI launched two groundbreaking self-publishing partnerships with leading traditional publishers: WestBow Press (Thomas Nelson) and Dellarte Press (Harlequin); and recently, ASI announced a third such partnership with Hay House Publishing, called Balboa Press.
"Leading traditional publishers are joining the revolution, creating more opportunities for authors and choices for readers," Ogorek added. "It truly is the best time ever to be an author."
