FDA schedules announcement about Essure birth control device for Wednesday
PHOENIX, June 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Sources report the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will make an announcement regarding the Essure Permanent Birth Control Implant around 10:00am Wednesday June 24, 2015.
Thousands of women have come forward reporting serious and debilitating injuries after receiving the Essure Implant. Some of the reported complications of the device include severe pain, implant migration requiring surgical removal or hysterectomy, ectopic pregnancy, and pregnancies resulting in premature births.
Essure is marketed as a non-surgical permanent birth control. During the outpatient procedure, metal coils are inserted into the fallopian tubes. The intent is to cause the formation of scar tissue around the coils, thus blocking the fallopian tubes and preventing pregnancy.
"Women chose to have this procedure without being informed of the debilitating and in many cases, life altering side effects," says Robert Arentz, founding partner of the Arentz Law Group.
In April 2015, The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that it would open an investigation of the Essure Permanent Contraceptive Device made by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Inc. This announcement came in response to allegations that the company falsified and altered medical records during clinical trials, failed to report adverse events, made fraudulent claims about the device's safety and efficacy, and used defective materials in manufacturing. Just a few months prior to the investigation, a private citizen's petition was submitted to the FDA urging the agency to remove Essure from the market. The FDA closed the petition in March, stating that it would be forwarded to the Office of Compliance.
