About the Portable People Meter
The Arbitron Portable People Meter service tracks consumers' exposure to media and entertainment, including broadcast, cable and satellite television; terrestrial, satellite and online radio as well as cinema advertising and many types of place-based digital media. Carried throughout the day by randomly selected survey participants, the PPM device passively captures exposure to television, radio, internet and other forms of media and entertainment and reports it back to Arbitron.
The PPM device detects inaudible codes embedded in the audio portion of media and entertainment content delivered by broadcasters, content providers and distributors. The PPM device is equipped with a motion sensor, a patented quality control feature unique to the system, which allows Arbitron to confirm the compliance of the PPM survey participants every day.
About the Arbitron Radio Diary
For more than forty years, the Arbitron diary successfully measures radio, reliably tracking audiences of more than 13,000 stations broadcasting in the United States as well as from Canada and Mexico.
The Arbitron diary methodology has evolved significantly over the past four decades, including improvements to sampling cell phone households and improving recruitment of hard to reach young and ethnic demographics.
