Apply Now for Paid Transportation Internships for High School Students
Deadline for Submissions is March 26, 2010
OAKLAND, Calif., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- High school students from throughout the Bay Area are invited to apply for paid summer jobs to receive work experience in the field of transportation through the High School Internship Program sponsored by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC). Students must be at least 16 years old and have completed 10th grade by the start of the program this June; the deadline for submissions is March 26.
"The program's purpose is to introduce students to potential careers in transportation," noted MTC Executive Director Steve Heminger. Students currently in the 10th, 11th or 12th grades this spring are eligible to apply, including graduating students.
Students will be employed, either full-time or part-time, for up to eight weeks between June and August, with cities and public agencies in a department related to transportation planning or engineering, public works or public transit. Hourly pay is $10. Currently, 30 paid internships are available throughout the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Jose, San Mateo, Solano and Sonoma counties). View the available positions at http://www.mtc.ca.gov/jobs/high_school/. Students with an unweighted grade-point average lower than 2.8 will be considered if accompanied by two letters of recommendation. Those students with an unweighted grade-point average above 2.8 need to submit just one letter of recommendation.
"This is an opportunity for students throughout the entire region," commented Ann Macaulay, program manager. "We especially need student applications for positions in Marin, Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties."
Application packets are available online from the MTC Web site (http://www.mtc.ca.gov/jobs/high_school/index.htm). MTC's high school internship coordinator can be contacted at 510.817.5807 for further information. Applications will be accepted via fax to 510.817.5848 or may be mailed or delivered in person to MTC at 101 Eighth Street, Oakland, California, 94607 (no e-mailed applications will be accepted). Note that only one application per student is allowed; please submit all required documents at one time and avoid duplicate submissions.
To apply, submit the completed application; the self-identification form; a cover letter of no more than one page describing your interest in your community or any area of transportation, with an explanation of why you are interested in this internship program; and the letter(s) of recommendation from a teacher, principal, counselor, religious leader or employer (one letter for students with an unweighted GPA above 2.8 and two letters for those with an unweighted GPA below 2.8). The application packet must arrive by Friday, March 26 (in some counties, the deadline may be extended until the internship positions are filled).
