Appearance Policies in the Workplace Can Be Adapted to the Situation, Just Like Many Business Aspects, Says Brandon Frere
PETALUMA, Calif., July 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- For a variety of reasons, dress codes are an inherent part of a cohesive business. They lend themselves to an air of professionalism or let customers know immediately that they're who to ask if they need assistance. However, Brandon Frere, successful entrepreneur and CEO of Frere Enterprises, says that a dress code or appearance policy should also keep in mind the overall environment when deciding upon what is acceptable for employees to wear to work and what is not.
"West coast standards of dress aren't the same as east coast. Keeping in mind what is already semi-established as acceptable may be a good baseline for deciding on what will be used at your business," says Frere. Some CEOs may feel a more formal look lends itself to higher-quality work because it may help an employee be in a more professional mindset. Having a certain standard keeps employees from showing up in sleepwear or ratty jeans and t-shirts because a certain level of professionalism does have to be maintained. Depending on the type of workplace and business location though, perhaps the dress code could be adjusted. During hot summer months, allowing for more relaxed dress may help productivity levels because employees do not feel stifled in clothing that is inappropriate for the weather. Or if the overall work culture is different, allowing well-maintained jeans along with a more business appropriate shirt may go over well at a company.
Allowing employees different types of freedoms may help them feel more comfortable at a business. There are ways to have an appearance policy that still projects an air of professionalism that isn't stifling to an employee. Some employees may even still dress more formally than is required because that is what they are comfortable with. An uncomfortable employee is often a less productive employee, and so having realistic guidelines for work attire in place may result in a more healthy and productive work environment. "If it's boiling outside and the inside of the workplace isn't temp-controlled, people are going to be more focused on how uncomfortable they are usually than the work in front of them if they're stuck inside heavy business wear. There are a lot of things that have to be balanced in a work environment to make it as productive as possible," says Frere.
