SAN FRANCISCO, March 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- App Annie, the most trusted mobile app data and insights company, is pleased to announce their annual Top 52 Publishers list of 2016, which recognizes the top earners within the iOS and Google Play stores.
Newcomers to App Annie's Top 52 include: Pokémon GO developer Niantic (United States), Netflix (United States), Perfect World (China), Snailgames (China), Baidu (China), Aristocrat (Australia), G-Bits (China) and Vivendi (France).
Of the Top 52, 30 are from the Asia-Pacific region, including China's Tencent (#1) and Netease (#3), Japan's LINE (#7) and Bandai (#8), and South Korea's Netmarble (#9). Notable publishers from the United States include Activision Blizzard (#5) and Pokemon Go developer Niantic (#10) – both notable wins as Niantic is a newcomer to the Top 52, and Activision Blizzard rose 26 spots to #5, largely due to their acquisitions of Candy Crush developer King in early 2016. Numerous app publishers have been featured in the top 10 for multiple years since App Annie's first Top 52 in 2012, demonstrating their enduring success and longevity of their app businesses in an increasingly competitive space including: Supercell, LINE, and Tencent.
"This demonstrates two key trends we're seeing," comments Danielle Levitas, SVP, Research at App Annie. "First, that gaming companies continue to be the dominant revenue engine within app stores, especially as innovative games like Pokémon GO expand the market. Second, that media and entertainment companies are seeing growth in mobile revenue and this is demonstrated by Netflix joining the Top 52. Given the ever-increasing share of time and share of wallet mobile apps are capturing, we will continue to see more industries enter the Top 52."
The Top 52 were celebrated on March 7-9, 2017 at individual events in Tokyo, Seoul and Beijing in celebration of local winners in locations where App Annie holds a presence.
"App Annie's Top 52 Publishers list is regarded as a measurement standard for global success in the mobile market," comments Bertrand Schmitt, CEO and co-founder at App Annie. "Mobile apps are increasingly business opportunities for new and traditional companies, so it is crucial to benchmark successful publishers to better understand the mobile app economy ecosystem. Congratulations to all the global winners, and particularly the newcomers, that ranked on the Global Top 52 Publishers list."

About the methodology
The App Annie 52 is comprised of the top 52 earners by combined iOS and Google Play revenue from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016 inclusive. Revenue rankings are based on revenue earned from paid downloads and in-app purchases on the iOS App Store and Google Play Store. They do not include revenue earned from in-app advertising or subscriptions outside app store channels.
We source our information from App Annie Intelligence, which generates the industry's most accurate market estimates for the app stores. We then tie everything together with our DNA technology to get a full picture of whole companies — including their subsidiaries.
