Apache Donates 25,000 Trees for Jan. 22 Arbor Day Planting

HOUSTON, Jan. 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Grab your boots, shovel and friends and get ready to dig. In celebration of Houston's 25th Annual Arbor Day, Apache Corporation has awarded 25,000 trees for planting Saturday, Jan. 22. Houston Parks and Recreation is recruiting 2,500 volunteers to help get the trees in the ground.

Houston's Arbor Day tree planting event is open to individuals, families, groups and businesses (children may participate if accompanied by a guardian). Following the planting, an Arbor Day Celebration featuring food, music and festivities will be held for all volunteers at Herman Brown Park.

Through its Tree Grant Program, Apache has awarded nearly 2 million trees since 2006 to more than 250 non-profit organizations including schools, cities, counties and parks in 14 states.

"As a company that makes its living producing natural resources, Apache takes its responsibilities to the environment seriously by continually assessing the company's 'footprint' on the planet and implementing appropriate actions to reduce that impact," said Obie O'Brien, Apache's vice president of Government Affairs.

Planting trees is an effective way to better communities by reducing sound, producing oxygen, storing carbon, providing shade, reducing erosion, and increasing property values, O'Brien explained.

Saturday's planting will begin at 7 a.m. at designated esplanades on Wallisville Road (between and Loop 610 and Mercury Drive) and at the Loop 610 and I-10 interchange. Volunteers should park at the Houston Community College – East Campus.
