ROHNERT PARK, Calif., March 7, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- While the heyday of big for-profit colleges in the United States may seem to be over — Corinthian Colleges is shut down, DeVry University was essentially given away — a new fight over for-profits is playing out in government. The latest news concerns 20 state attorneys general who have banded together to rebuke the Department of Education in what they call a "major step backward" in rules regarding borrower defense against repayment. Amid the headlines about for-profits are the lives of real students, including those who had both good and bad experiences at for-profit schools. Ameritech Financial, a private document preparation company which specializes in assisting federal student loan borrowers in applying for and maintaining enrollment in repayment plans and forgiveness programs, recognizes the complexity of the for-profit school phenomenon.
"Former students of for-profit colleges may have a range of experiences regarding their education, but student loan debt is a common story among many of those individuals," said Tom Knickerbocker, executive vice president of Ameritech Financial. "We provide a service to student loan borrowers who may be approaching us from all different places regarding their education."
Borrower defense is a Department of Education process that discharges student loans for former students of for-profit institutions who received a sham education. These student loan borrowers may be waiting for debt forgiveness with their loans in a forbearance status. However, attendees of for-profit institutions who don't need borrower defense may still have federal loans and, whether they are happy with their education or not, need to address them.
Ameritech Financial helps borrowers select, apply for and recertify enrollment in repayment plans that can potentially lower their monthly payments to manageable amounts. Specifically, Ameritech Financial specializes in applications and recertifications for income-driven repayment plans (IDRs), which are designed to help give borrowers an affordable payment by basing it on income and family size. Help with required forms and supplementary paperwork for applications and recertification are a mainstay of Ameritech's services.
While for-profit schools are often painted in broad strokes as uniformly bad — which, given some of the colleges' practices is understandable — the reasons for students attending these schools are varied, as are their experiences. However, no matter the quality of education, attending a for-profit can come at a steep cost for borrowers, as they are often more expensive than other types of schools.
"We recognize that the for-profit higher education landscape is a complicated one, but student loan borrowers need help regardless," said Knickerbocker. "For those who are interested in assistance with applications and recertifications regarding repayment and certain forgiveness programs, Ameritech Financial provides exceptional service."
