American Airlines Partners with MGM Resorts International, USO to Honor Veterans in 'A Salute to the Troops' Las Vegas Trip
Earn Miles for Donations to the USO Through American's Miles in Support of All Who Serve Program
FORT WORTH, Texas, Nov. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- As an expression of thanks to those who serve in the U.S. armed forces, American Airlines is partnering with MGM Resorts International and the United Service Organizations (USO) to send a group of wounded service members from around the country to the fourth annual "A Salute to the Troops" weekend in Las Vegas, Nov. 8-12. As the official airline of the USO, American is also raising funds for the organization through a special American Airlines AAdvantage® offer.
"Honoring those who serve our country, including their loved ones, is deeply ingrained in the culture at American Airlines," said Capt. John Hale, American's Vice President – Flight and a U.S. Air Force veteran. "Their dedication and sacrifice for our great nation have made possible the freedoms we enjoy today. It is with deep respect and appreciation that we work to serve them as they serve our country."
Coinciding with "A Salute to the Troops," through Nov. 14 AAdvantage members can earn 15 AAdvantage bonus miles, instead of 10, for each dollar donated to the USO through American's Miles in Support of All Who Serve program. A minimum $25 donation is required. This cash donation incentive program helps the USO fulfill its mission to lift the spirits of troops and their families through a variety of morale-boosting services and programs that support deployed troops, wounded, ill and injured troops, their families and caregivers, and families of the fallen. For more information and to donate, visit AA.com/JoinUs.
"Both of these American Airlines opportunities truly represent what the USO is all about – giving the public a chance to say 'thank you' to our servicemen and servicewomen and their families," said USO President and CEO Sloan Gibson. "We are grateful to have a longstanding partner, American Airlines, which not only supports our mission but also helps us achieve it. With a special trip to Las Vegas for our healing heroes, plus the additional support of AAdvantage members, American will help the USO lift the spirits of troops and their families. We can't do it without their support."
On Nov. 8, more than 60 wounded, ill and injured troops and their guests will travel from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda Naval Hospital and other treatment centers to Las Vegas for a weekend packed with entertainment activities and sightseeing. American will provide transportation for the group aboard one of its yellow-ribbon aircraft from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). Led by American Airlines employee volunteers, a special send-off event will be held to honor service members. While in Las Vegas, MGM Resorts International and its properties and affiliated performers will provide a weekend of activities.
"We know that freedom isn't free. As a leader in the hospitality industry, we are inspired to give back to our wounded warriors who have given so much to us through their military service," said Jim Murren, Chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International. "Salute to the Troops" is the least we can do for the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedom. We hope they can rest, relax and take in the sights of Las Vegas."
Upon arriving in Las Vegas, the group will travel to The Mirage Hotel and Casino, a MGM Resorts property, where they will be welcomed with a "Walk of Gratitude" prior to a ceremony and dinner hosted by The Mirage. Throughout the weekend, the service members and their guests will be treated to a variety of excursions including shows and activities at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino; The Mirage and Mandalay Bay; a banquet at Aria Hotel and Resort; a visit to Aviation Nation at Nellis Air Force Base; and a softball game between the wounded warrior team and employees of MGM Resorts at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
Saturday evening will feature "A Night of Stars" with dinner and a concert by Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band, who will be joined by other performers including comedic magician Nathan Burton.
On Nov. 12, the group will be treated to a send-off brunch at the New York New York Las Vegas Hotel and Casino before their chartered American Airlines flight departs Las Vegas for Washington and New York.
American Airlines and MGM Resorts International are the title sponsors of "A Salute to the Troops" weekend, with support from the USO and Greyhound Lines, Inc.
