Amazon.com Marches Across Europe, Dominating E-Retail in the Region, says Internet Retailer
The top-ranked e-retailer in the Internet Retailer 2015 Europe 500 operates six localized websites and 20 fulfillment centers across Europe and increased its European web sales 20% in 2014.
CHICAGO, June 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Cross-border sales on the marketplace section of its six localized European websites (in Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands) helped Amazon.com Inc., the top-ranked e-retailer in Europe, grow its total 2014 European web sales roughly 20% to an Internet Retailer-estimated 20.09 billion euros ($23.62 billion USD) from 17.58 billion euros ($19.68 billion USD) in 2013, according to Internet Retailer's just-released 2015 Europe 500 guide. Now in its fifth edition, the trusted e-commerce resource provides comprehensive rankings, financial numbers and operating details of Europe's 500 largest web merchants based on their 2014 online sales. Hailing from 33 countries, the web merchants ranked in the 2015 Europe 500 collectively grew their web sales 15.6% to $141.35 billion USD.

In Germany and the United Kingdom, where Amazon has been selling online since the late 1990s, web sales increased 13.1% to $11.91 billion and 14.4% to $8.34 billion, respectively. Amazon operates 20 fulfillment centers across Europe and offers in much of the region Amazon Prime, its loyalty program that offers free two-day shipping and other perks. Besides Amazon, 14 other web merchants listed in the top 25 of the 2015 Europe 500 rankings sell beyond their home country; they are Tesco Stores, Otto Group, Staples Inc., Apple Inc., Dixons Stores Group, John Lewis Plc, Zalando, Vente-Privee, Marks & Spencer, J. Sainsbury Plc, ASOS Plc Holdings, Next Plc, Carrefour Group and Royal Ahold N.V.
