Alliance For Main Street Fairness Sends Correspondence to Amazon Chief
Despite Bezos' Claims, Technology Has Made Sales Tax Collection Very Simple
ARLINGTON, Va., May 12, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is being released by the Alliance for Main Street Fairness:
Dear Mr. Bezos,
We noticed a comment you made recently in a news report published by Reuters and wanted to offer some assistance.
In the article you are quoted as saying, "The sales tax collection is very complicated." ("Amazon Could Cut Ties In More States Over Tax Dispute," Reuters, 5/11/11)
We understand that Amazon offers a wide array of products, so it's understandable that you may have overlooked software available on your own Web site which would make sales tax collection a breeze – even for your multi-billion dollar company. This particular product seems a bargain at $224.99 (plus tax of course). Now, if this particular product is not to your liking, there appear to be plenty of other options from books to software also available for sale on your Web site (Do you get a company discount?)
Given that your company already collects sales taxes directly in five states – and subsidiaries of yours collect in several more – it's clear you have the knowledge to implement such a "complicated" system. In fact, one could argue that implementing a simple collections process would be cheaper than the millions you are spending on lawyers, lobbyists and PR firms across the country in an effort to evade collecting sales tax. For a Princeton grad, this should be a piece of cake. But if you have doubts, perhaps you should consult your shareholders.
We know times are tough, and your political efforts have likely left you strapped for capital. So if you're interested, we'll gladly pick up the $224.99 tab (plus sales tax) to help out. What's a gift among friends?
Most Sincerely,
The thousands of businesses that make up the Alliance for Main Street Fairness (AMSF)
