Alliance for Digital Equality Statement on Obama Administration's Plan to Expand Broadband
Group encourages white house to weigh in on policies that hinder affordable access to broadband
ATLANTA, June 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Julius H. Hollis, Chairman of the Alliance for Digital Equality (ADE), issued the following statement regarding today's announcement that the Obama Administration is moving forward to put into action recommendations made by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) in its National Broadband Plan:
"We are pleased the Obama Administration is moving forward with recommendations made by the FCC as part of its National Broadband Plan, in an effort to achieve the previously stated goal of universal broadband access. This initiative will incite the private sector investment necessary to create valuable jobs and spur economic growth that will strengthen our country while bringing us one step closer to bridging the digital divide that still exists today. But only if all carriers are allowed a fair chance to obtain their spectrum, as outlined in the FCC's Plan.
"As we continue to move in the right direction toward this goal, ensuring affordable access is absolutely critical. As such, I hope that the Administration will also weigh in on any policies that would hinder affordable access to broadband – specifically, plans to reclassify broadband providers as common carrier services. A move that ADE believes could keep 100 million Americans economically disfranchised and locked out of our society.
"Broadband provides unparalleled opportunities for people of color to advance in the areas of education, health care, and economic development, makes our communities stronger. It also facilitates communication and the delivery of services for local police and fire departments, security firms and more, makes our communities safer. The benefits are great for all, and should be available to all for an affordable price. I look forward to working with the Administration to achieve this important goal."
