Alex Getelman Of MBI Group Announces Completion Of 35,000 SF Build-Out For Columbia University
LEADING NYC-BASED CONSTRUCTION COMPANY PROVIDED GENERAL CONTRACTING SERVICES FOR THE STUDEBAKER BUILDING
NEW YORK, Sept. 14, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- MBI Group, a New York City-based construction firm specializing in commercial interior fit-outs, completed general contracting work for Columbia University as part of a competitive bid for its office build-out on the sixth floor of The Studebaker Building, located at 615 West 131st Street in Manhattan. The Studebaker Building, originally constructed in the 1920s, is a historic, six-story industrial property that is today a part of Columbia's Manhattanville campus.
"We are honored to have worked with Columbia University, a world-class institution, who sought a general contractor to revitalize the building's offices," said Alex Getelman, Executive Managing Director of MBI Group. "Historic properties always require special considerations; The Studebaker Building was a former automobile factory, with a loft-like aesthetic, which today serves as administrative offices. Our goal was to complete the project successfully under a tight deadline. For over 30 years, MBI Group has completed projects for some of New York City's most prominent educational clients."
The scope of the completed work for the 35,000 square-foot project included demolition, concrete, fire stopping, SonaSpray acoustical treatment on the exposed ceiling slab, drywall partitions, drywall and acoustical ceilings and glass and metal storefronts. The project also included millwork, installation of ceramic tile, flooring, painting, plumbing, sprinkler, life safety, mechanical and electrical systems. MBI Group worked closely with Columbia University's Commissioning Agent and Information Technology department throughout the course of the project, a key aspect of all of Columbia University projects. Occupants began moving into the new space in 2016; the project concluded in February 2018.
Special requirements when working with Columbia University included utilizing the project management software, Oracle Unifier. The University is also dedicated to its diversity program and requires strict monthly compliance reporting; MBI Group, an MBE-certified company, is aligned with this mission to not only meet but exceed diversity requirements.
The aggressive schedule for the project required careful procurement of long-lead items to achieve completion with a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy (TCO) before the start of the following semester. The Switzer Group was hired by the University as the architect for the project, and worked closely with the Columbia University team and MBI Group for a successful completion.
