"If it were not for corporations like White Castle, a lot of these families would not have a Christmas," says Delores Bennett, founder of Adopt-A-Child. "We are so pleased they have continued to support us over the years," she added.
Bennett says the success of the project depends on the community's willingness to financially assist with purchasing gifts or supporting the cost of the event. The annual Adopt-A-Child Christmas Party (this Friday at 5pm at Cobo) is one of Detroit's longest running goodwill holiday traditions. It started in Bennett's Eastside Detroit home when she and her late husband decided to provide Christmas gifts to needy families in the neighborhood. The program is simple: Parents who Adopt-a-Child for the day get to meet their children, and present gifts at the annual party. Many relationships are just for that evening, while others have lasted a lifetime.
Since then her organization, the Northeast Youth Improvement Council (NEYIC), a (501(c)3 has recruited sponsors that give clothes and toys to thousands of adopted children. In addition, her organization has refurbished a local park and continues to help families long after Christmas.
