AARP Launches 10th Year of Awards Program for Best Employers for Workers Over 50
Employers encouraged to apply at www.aarp.org/bestemployers
CHICAGO, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AARP recently launched the 10th year of its signature Best Employers for Workers Over 50 awards program.
Over the last decade, the Best Employers honor has become a coveted recognition of just how many American employers have put in place progressive practices toward older workers.
"With great economic pressures on the bottom line, many employers continue to recognize that successful business practices include enlightened talent management," said Terri Worman, Associate State Director for AARP Illinois.
Worman noted that the honorees over the past decade have ranged from large corporations such as Intel and Michelin North America, to leading universities such as Cornell (NY), major health and hospital systems and smaller organizations such as the YMCA of Greater Rochester, NY.
Employers in Illinois who offer progressive workplace practices and policies that meet the needs of workers 50 and over must apply before February 10, 2011 at www.aarp.org/bestemployers.
As the economy recovers, attracting and retaining skilled workers will become increasingly critical for employers seeking to retain a competitive edge. Estimates are that by 2018, one-third (34 percent) of the total U.S. workforce is expected to be 50 or older, up from 28 percent in 2007.
"It is clear that the mature workforce, with diverse needs, will play an important role in a multigenerational work environment," said Worman.
The AARP Best Employers search examines organizations that offer policies and practices that appeal to workers 50 and over, including flexible work options, training opportunities, and competitive health and retirement benefits.
Any employer with at least 50 employees and based in the United States is eligible to apply for the AARP Best Employers for Workers Over 50 honor. This includes for-profit companies, not-for-profit organizations, educational institutions and local, state, and federal government agencies.
An independent research firm and a panel of judges comprised of national experts score applicants. Final ranking is based on these scores after review by AARP. All employers who apply for the award receive valuable workforce management information and feedback about their application.
The program is held biennially.
