Working with Second Wind Dreams, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of seniors, Harrah's Rincon will host an event granting her dream and honoring her part in America's history at Premier Jet at the Palomar Airport in Carlsbad, Calif. from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Tompkins is one of the 1,900 women who served during WWII as Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), and was one of the first women trained to fly American military aircraft. During the war, she test flew, pulled targets and ferried planes in both calm and emergency landing conditions. The AT6 Texan plane was her favorite. In 2010, Tompkins was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in Washington D.C. by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
"It is such a wonderful opportunity for our resort to get to know and honor such remarkable seniors like Ruth," said Janet Beronio, Senior Vice President and General Manager. "We have been deeply touched to have been a part of helping make more than 50 Second Wind Dreams wishes come true during the past year."
Second Wind Dreams is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for seniors living in elder care communities (nursing homes, assisted living, hospice, etc.) and changing the perception of aging. Wishes that are granted fall into six categories including fun, life long, relationship, need, reliving the past and quality of life and range from no cost to thousands of dollars to support.
Since May 2010, employees at Harrah's Rincon have worked with four assisted living communities in the San Diego area granting dreams that have included an arm wrestling match with a professional athlete, a chance to perform with the Sweet Adelines and the opportunity to milk a cow one more time. Volunteers have also visited the facilities to host such events as movie evenings, casino afternoons, and a gardening event.
Also at the July 25 event, two local senior artists will be granted their dream of having an art gallery display their work and be professionally judged for merit by Southwest Artist Lynn Morgan.
The Caesars Foundation continually gives back to the parents and grandparents across the country through its senior-focused outreach in the communities Caesars Entertainment serves. Since 2009, the Caesars Foundation has given more than $650,000 ($250,000 given in 2011) in donations and in kind contributions to make dreams a reality. Nationally, Caesars Entertainment engages its resorts in regions including Las Vegas, New Orleans, Hammond, Ind. and Atlantic City in Second Wind Dreams work.
"The value of the support that we have received from Caesars Foundation and Caesars Entertainment is immeasurable," said P.K. Beville, Founder and President of Second Wind Dreams. "The volunteers go above and beyond making these unique experiences possible for our seniors."
