2011 BRAVO BUSINESS AWARDS: Latin Trade's Annual Awards Recognize Dominican President Leonel Fernandez for Lifetime Achievement

MIAMI, Aug. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Latin Trade, the leading pan-regional business magazine focusing on Latin America and the Caribbean, announced today that Dominican President Leonel Fernandez will be recognized with the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award at the 17th BRAVO Business Awards, to be held on October 28 in Miami.

President Fernandez was previously honored with the BRAVO Leader of the Year award in 2000 and 2006. This year, Fernandez is being cited for his two decades at the center of Dominican politics. He has championed a constitutional reform that will have an enduring impact and worked to overcome an economic slump by pushing technology and infrastructure. Fernandez has also been influential in regional cooperation, aiding the resolution of the 2009 political impasse in Honduras and working to reduce tensions among Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela.

Celebrating excellence and achievement in Latin America and the Caribbean, the BRAVO Business Awards pay tribute to government, business, social and humanitarian leaders for their contributions towards progress in the region. Recipients are selected by a group of judges from a pool of candidates nominated by Latin Trade magazine readers and other third parties.

The BRAVO Business Awards Black Tie Gala will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Miami on October 28, 2011. The awards ceremony takes place in conjunction with the Latin Trade Symposium, a leading pan-regional conference for the public and private sectors, organized in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank and the Americas Society/Council of the Americas.

As recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, Dominican President Leonel Fernandez and the other 2011 honorees will attend the gala and be featured in the September/October issue of Latin Trade magazine.

Lifetime Achievement Award   Leonel Fernandez – President of Dominican Republic  

Innovative Leader of the Year   Laurence Golborne – Chilean Minister of Public Works

Golborne, then minister of mining, spearheaded last year's dramatic rescue of miners trapped below the Atacama Desert. The safe return of all 33 men was a triumph emblematic of Chile and its government's ability to turn determination into success.

Financier of the Year   Agustin Carstens – Mexican Central Bank Governor

Through his technical skills and personal credibility as a policymaker, Carstens helped revive the Mexican economy after a severe contraction in 2009. He was also a contender to lead the International Monetary Fund this year.

Distinguished Service in the Hemisphere Award   Alberto Aleman Zubieta – CEO, Panama Canal Authority

With the $5.25 billion canal expansion underway, Aleman has transformed the organization overseeing the inter-oceanic passage into a business-oriented institution boosting trade in the hemisphere and around the globe.

CEO of the Year   Marcelo Odebrecht – President and CEO, Odebrecht S.A.

Since taking the helm of the Brazilian firm, Odebrecht has expanded operations in Brazil and expanded into new ventures in an international strategy involving engineering and construction projects around the world.  

Dynamic CEO of the Year   Luis Carlos Sarmiento Gutierrez – CEO, Grupo Aval

Stepping up to a leadership role in the financial group, Sarmiento has been on the move, both helping to oversee the acquisition of a Central American banking group and shepherding a recent stock sale in Colombia.

Emerging CEO of the Year   Martin Migoya – CEO, Globant

As co-founder and now chief executive of Globant, Migoya has turned the Argentine software developer into a fast-growing company. He led the recent acquisition of the San Francisco-headquartered Nextive, expanding Globant's portfolio of services and international footprint.

Humanitarian of the Year   Luanne Zurlo – President and Founder, Worldfund
