XJTLU Ushers in a New Academic Year of Sino-British Education in China

SUZHOU, China, Aug. 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The official Opening Ceremony for Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) was held on August 25th. The event marks the culmination of undergraduate registration with over 2200 new domestic students arriving on campus over the weekend, as well as more than 80 students from 27 different countries, in time for the start of teaching on September 2nd.

155 of this years' intake were awarded prestigious scholarships totaling almost 7 million RMB ($1.1m).

The Ceremony was an opportunity for students and parents to come together and listen to speeches of congratulation and welcome from staff, alumni and the University's Executive President, Professor Youmin Xi.

During his address he said: "XJTLU is a new international university born in an era which calls for reflection in higher education and the reshaping of universities" adding that the whole university is "committed to producing global citizens with international perceptions and competitiveness."

He assured new students that "you will secure abundant resources, multi-cultural innovation experience, and more importantly, the passion to explore and to build your dream."

One former student addressing the audience praised the University's "internationalisation" and "cosmopolitan environment", highlighting this as the reason for choosing to study at XJTLU.

The ceremony ended with a public Q & A session when students and parents got the rare opportunity to direct their question to XJTLU senior management in front of an audience of thousands.
