About the Artist:
The clarinet - once the king of popular, classical and folk music - has been forgotten. In recent years, Israeli woodwind virtuoso, Anat Cohen has been 'bringing the Clarinet to the world' (Terry Gross, Fresh Air, 2013) and making it relevant in today's musical landscape. Universally critically acclaimed, Anat has been labeled a 'Master' by the New York Times, and voted best clarinet player by downbeat, jazztimes and other associations. Clarinetist-saxophonist, Anat Cohen has won hearts and minds the world over with her expressive virtuosity and delightful stage presence. Reviewing one of Anat's headlining sets with her quartet at the North See Jazz Festival, DownBeat said, "Cohen not only proved to be a woodwind revelation of dark tones and delicious lyricism, but also a dynamic bandleader who danced and shouted out encouragement to her group - whooping it up when pianist Jason Lindner followed her clarinet trills on a Latin-flavored number... With her dark, curly, shoulder-length hair swaying to the beat as she danced, she was a picture of joy."
Anat Cohen began playing clarinet and saxophone and in 1996 studied at the Berklee College of Music. She has also recorded with her brothers Avishai Cohen (trumpeter) and Yuval Cohen (alto and soprano saxophonist).
Her debut album, 'Place & Time', features Jason Lindner, Ben Street, Jeff Ballard, and Avishai Cohen was released in 2005 on Anzic Records. Anat performs regularly and has appeared at a number of notable jazz festivals, including the Newport Jazz Festival, Montreal International Jazz Festival, Tudo É Jazz Festival, and the North Sea Jazz Festival.
