Taiwanese Giants Battle with North American and Chinese Counterparts for Ultra HD TV Chipset Supremacy, says Strategy Analytics
- North America's Sigma Designs Leads 4k TV Silicon Technology Innovation but Taiwan's MStar and Mediatek Drive Volume.
BOSTON, July 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Taiwanese silicon vendors currently dominate the market for 4k TV chipsets but their position is being challenged by a number of fabless semiconductor vendors across North America and China. US specialists Sigma Designs and Marvell along with China's Huawei-owned HiSilicon are leading a group of vendors that are implementing new designs to support next generation Ultra HD TV features and standards.

Other key findings from the report include:
- The 4k TV System-on-Chip supplier market is highly competitive and is currently dominated by the Taiwanese vendors Mediatek, MStar and Novatek.
- Phase 1 compatible (HEVC Main10, 60fps, HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2) Ultra HD TV devices are now commonplace. A handful of silicon vendors now have devices that support Phase 2 UHD (HDR, Rec. 2020 WCG) and more are expected to implement these features later in 2015 and early 2016.
- High Frame Rate (HFR) has the largest potential cost impact on Ultra HD TV decoders and silicon vendors have no plans to introduce 4k@120fps devices anytime soon.
Quotes:
David Watkins, Service Director, Connected Home Devices, said, "Silicon is readily available today to support 'phase 1 UHD' requirements such as 60fps, HEVC Main 10 and HDMI 2.0. Leading TV manufacturers are now looking to implement advanced Ultra HD features such as High Dynamic Range and Wider Color Gamuts in order to build on the early momentum in the market and create product differentiation." He added, "Silicon with support for internal HDR decoding is slowly emerging but it may take increased availability of HDR content and 10 bit panels before the majority of silicon vendors jump in".
