MUMBAI, June 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --
With Prime Minister Narendra Modi's campaign for a cleaner India (Swachh Bharat Program) in the foreground, Strata Geosystems is proud to announce its recent accomplishment - The 1st Vertical Landfill in India, in the industrial town of Vapi, with the aegis of Vapi Green Enviro Limited. The challenge for Vapi industrial area was to fit 260,000m3 of toxic waste in a landfill built for 150,000m3 of this waste. Thinking out of the box, Strata came up with an innovative approach involving a multitude of geosynthetic materials and devised a containment system with a reinforced soil structure. This is a slim, yet safe structure which would generate more space for storage. This vertical expansion was made possible without the need for a voluminous earth retaining structure.

With a dedicated technical team at Strata led by Chief Technology Officer, Shahrokh Bagli, a wide spectrum of advanced geotechnical offerings at hand, and a determined objective to minimize cost, Strata proposed an unconventional approach to the various facets of expanding the landfill.
The conventional method of containing landfills with earth dykes requires a large base for stability. Strata's creative design is with reinforced soil structures as containment, which has a smaller footprint and still facilitates building vertically. Vertical expansion was made possible with StrataGrid™ geogrids and StrataBlock™ modular precast concrete blocks without the need for voluminous earth retaining structures.
What about the other parts of the landfill which were already closed? The containment was initially completed with conventional earth embankments and side slopes. Typically, mulch mats are used along the outer slopes to foster greenery and to prevent slope erosion. However, at Vapi, the outer slopes were steep and lined with smooth geomembrane. Mulch mats with soil cover were tried earlier and just slid off. The green look was provided using StrataWeb® geocells placed in position by tying with StrataGrid™ geogrids laid below. StrataGrid™ and StrataWeb® were anchored into a reinforced soil mound at the crest. The end result is an aesthetically pleasing green slope.
