Sky and Space Global Commended by Frost & Sullivan for Pioneering the Deployment of Communication Nano-Satellites
Frost & Sullivan Recognises Sky and Space Global with 2018 Global Company of the Year Award for its Industry Leading and Defining Capabilities
LONDON, Oct. 8, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent analysis of the global nano-satellites market, Frost & Sullivan distinguishes Sky and Space Global (SAS) with the 2018 Global Company of the Year Award for being first-to-market with a series of nano-satellite solutions. From deploying the first communication nano-satellites to enabling financial transactions over nano-satellites and ensuring cybersecurity integrations, SAS has many industry-first credits to its name.
"SAS is the first company to deploy three communication nano-satellites, weighing 1 to 10 kilograms. They fly in a formation, enabled by SAS' differential drag formation flying and intrasatellite communications technologies," said Arun Kumar Sampathkumar, Industry Manager at Frost & Sullivan. "These three nano-satellites are the first of nearly 200 that SAS plans to deploy by 2020 to enable around-the-clock coverage in an area plus or minus 15 degrees from the equator. Insights generated in the simulator will integrate into the SAS proprietary network management software, which will ensure that the constellation maintains a specific distance between each satellite."
SAS' first three test nano-satellites, called 3 Diamonds, are already in orbit and constitute a small but valid communication network in space. Additional nano-satellite industry-first achievements for SAS include:
- Inter-satellite communication
- Transfer of data, images, phone calls, and the first financial transaction over nano-satellite
- Connection to the global phone network system
- Flight in a formation without any propulsion, relying only on the differential drag
- Cyber-security protection
The new and cost-effective communication methods enabled by SAS' nano-satellites are resulting in new downstream applications, such as financial transactions via virtual wallets on mobile phones. To maintain transaction integrity via its satellites, SAS partners with cyber-security provider CheckPoint. This collaboration will allow SAS to integrate CheckPoint's solutions with its own for early-stage threat detection and prevention. In addition to the financial services and communications markets, SAS also enables applications in the growing Internet of Things (IoT) and machine-to-machine (M2M) markets.
"Meanwhile, to achieve its target of establishing a constellation, SAS signed a contract with nano-satellite manufacturer and supplier GomSpace to produce more than 200 nano-satellites," noted Sampathkumar. "To comply with SAS' strict requirements, GomSpace is establishing a separate dedicated satellite production line, which will operate according to serial production standards established by the automotive industry; representing a significant advancement in satellite manufacturing—another proof point of how SAS is changing the industry."
