The 'Sarvajal' project, a collaborative effort between SGS India Private Limited and the Ajay D Piramal Foundation, is a breakthrough initiative which uniquely combines technology and science to effectively address the challenge of access to affordable and safe drinking water posed to the underserved population living in the villages of India.
Based on a unique Water ATM model, the project involves set-up of a cloud connected community-level drinking water purification system in the village. This unit is connected to an automated Water ATM which dispenses purified drinking water 24/7 on pay-per-use basis with the use of smart cards. Owing to very nominal cost of transaction, access to pure drinking water has become affordable and easy for the villagers. The water purification systems are fitted with a device which captures minute-by-minute machine status on the backend server allowing the remotely-based operation teams to closely monitor and maintain the water quality, flow and quantity for optimum processing and machine fitness.
Commenting on this, Mr. Cresenciano G. Maramot, Managing Director - SGS India and Sri Lanka says, "SGS strongly believes in adding value to society. We seek to positively impact through our activities and use our scale and expertise to create sustainable value, respect human rights and invest responsibly in communities in which we operate. Through these efforts, we support the society in as broad a way as possible. The United Nations General Assembly has explicitly recognized access to clean drinking water and sanitation as a basic human right. SGS supports this and we have made this as one of our sustainability priorities."
The project has been successfully commissioned in the following villages across India - Yeoti (Maharashtra), Bhaur (Maharashtra), Chandrawati (Madhya Pradesh), Rohane (Maharashtra), Chirhara (Haryana), Thantadi (Andhra Pradesh) and Bakaspura (Jharkhand). Several other villages are expected to be covered by the end of the year 2018. Through such continuous efforts and investments in villages, SGS has been positively impacting lives of hundreds of underserved communities in India to enable a more sustainable future.
