The Santa Fe, New Mexico based company customized the CryoQ, a high performance, small volume vaccine shipper to meet the demands of safely transporting temperature sensitive vaccines in hot environments without access to reliable refrigeration. The CryoQ was chosen for its ability to consistently maintain the -70 degrees C needed to transport the candidate vaccines to areas affected by Ebola transmission.
Bruce McCormick, President of SAVSU Technologies, attended the WHO TechNet 21 Immunization Conference in 2013 and again this May in Bangkok to discuss vaccine transportation needs with WHO officials.
"A critical component of a successful clinical trial is to minimize variables. Maintaining a temperature of -94 degrees F (-70 degrees C) during distribution in rural Africa is an enormous challenge; failure to do so can represent an unacceptable variable," says McCormick.
One variable that can negatively impact cryogenic vaccines is complicated pack out processes. Another reason the CryoQ was selected by the WHO is the simple, fast pack out process which reduces the risk of human error and saves time getting life saving vaccines to affected populations. It is also durable and reusable making it ideal for trials in remote areas.
"Our mission," says McCormick, "is to close the gap from origin to patient in vaccine delivery, whether it is an Ebola vaccine, a biopharma product or any other critical material that improves global health. The Ebola epidemic really highlights that developing vaccines isn't enough, we need to safely deliver them."
