Parallel Wireless Announces Collaboration for Commercially Ready Virtualized C-RAN Reference Architectures
Innovative Multi-technology Reference Designs Allow Mobile Operators to Deploy HetNets as Easy and as Cost-effective as Wi-Fi
NASHUA, New Hampshire, Nov. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Parallel Wireless, Inc., the pioneer in making cellular network deployments as easy and as cost-effective as enterprise Wi-Fi, today announces commercially ready 3GPP-compliant end-to-end virtualized RAN (vRAN) reference designs that use Intel® technology. The innovative designs integrate 3G, 4G/LTE, and Wi-Fi with real-time network orchestration and resource optimization to enable mobile operators cost-effectively deploy multi-technology HetNets.
The mobile operators are looking for new and affordable ways to address an increase in mobile data traffic over their multi-mode, multi-band networks and cannot justify investing in a single technology solution.
Parallel Wireless Converged Wireless System (CWS) base station utilizes the Intel® Transcede™ T3150 dual-mode small cell system on chip (SoC). This reference design combines 3G, 4G/LTE and Wi-Fi and their functions into a single footprint, using common network connectivity, power, and backhaul. This greatly reduces additional capital expenditures and the need to acquire new small cell real estate, simplifies the backhaul infrastructure, and reduces overall power consumption. As a result, mobile operators can reduce CAPEX/OPEX and complexity of supporting increased capacity on their networks, enable seamless connectivity for the mobile users, while making the best use of all available spectrum.
By combining the real-time orchestration capabilities, carrier-grade gateway virtualized network functions (VNFs), and C-RAN on HetNet Gateway (HNG) from Parallel Wireless with carrier-grade OpenStack and Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK) running on Intel® Xeon® processor-based servers, this reference design offers a "best in class" virtualized RAN solution. Mobile operators can use this to lower deployment and management costs of multi-technology networks without sacrificing performance. As global mobile operators continue to move toward virtualized network architectures, this solution will support this transformation by significantly accelerating the design, trial and deployment of SDN- and NFV-based architectures.
The multi-technology reference designs from Parallel Wireless include Radisys' Femtotality 3G small cell solution: a 3G software stack integrated on Intel's chipset to deliver 3G RAN hardware functionality on CWS and 3G VNFs (including HNB gateway) for the HNG.
Steve Papa, founder and CEO, Parallel Wireless, said, "The radio and orchestration layers are the most complex domains to virtualize. Programmable virtualized networks are the future of the telecommunications industry, and we are excited to be collaborating with Intel, the leading industry player in virtualization, for these important reference designs. This unique partnership allowed Parallel Wireless to develop a deployment-ready 3G/4G solution on accelerated timeline and positions us well for further collaboration on multi-RAT solutions, licensed and unlicensed such as LTE-AAA and Wi-Fi."
Naser Adas, general manager of the Heterogeneous Network Solutions Group at Intel said, "Through their new reference designs that use Intel® technology, Parallel Wireless is able to bring HetNet to market with a full range of SDN and NFV technologies that enable separation of control and user plane, offering a path to a scalable HetNet solution for LTE and 5G."
