BENGALURU, May 18, 2018 /PRNewswire/ --
The Health & Nutrition Program at Orchids The International School ensures a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle for students
According to an alarming study, India has the second highest number of obese children in the world after China, with 14.4 million overweight kids in the country. Keeping this in mind, Orchids The International School has started a new initiative - The Health & Nutrition Program, for students across all its campuses. The objective of this program is to improve the lifestyle of the students to ensure better health and overall personality development.
The program is divided into four major categories, where, the different parameters for the total health of each child will be assessed. These major parameters are:
- Physical fitness
- Anthropometric well-being
- Clinical well-being
- Monitoring their nutritional status
- Monitoring and logging of data at regular intervals
Students are comprehensively assessed based on these parameters and given a customized nutrition and health plan to be followed, based on the results. This ensures that the diverse needs of each student with respect to their health are addressed.
Globally, the prevalence of overweight children and obesity has shown a remarkable rise in the last couple of decades amongst children and adults alike. In fact, studies have even revealed a significant rise in the level of blood pressure in childhood.
Childhood obesity has been associated with numerous other health risk factors such as High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol, increased risk of Impaired Glucose Tolerance, Insulin Resistance and Type 2 Diabetes, breathing problems, such as Sleep Apnea and Asthma, Joint problems and Musculoskeletal discomfort. Adolescents have a greater risk of Social and Psychological Problems.
Multiple potential factors have been identified that eventually precipitates or aggravates the problem of childhood obesity. For example:
- Monthly family income (indirectly determines the food habits of children especially with regard to consumption of outside foods/ junk foods)
- Consumption of energy-dense foods/junk foods/sweetened beverages
- Excessive consumption of salts
- Reduced number of meals or skipping of breakfast
- Eating outside too often
- Minimal physical activity at school and/or at home on a regular basis
- Prolonged hours of watching television or using computers for long hours
The prevalence of childhood obesity has significantly increased over the years and there is a crucial need to implement cost-effective measures to reduce the development of metabolic complications. In fact, development of a comprehensive evidence-based strategy well supported by the health education campaign will definitely reduce the magnitude of the childhood obesity in the future years to come.
Orchids The International School leads the way in ensuring a proper diet and a healthy lifestyle for the children, enabling them to be prepared physically and mentally for the challenges of life.
