According to a recent report from the Harvard School of Public Health, India spends about $40 U.S. dollars per person annually on healthcare, compared to the United States which spends $8,500 U.S. dollars. An OECD report concluded that in India there is less than one practicing physician (.07) per 1,000 people – well below the 3.2 physicians per 1,000 people global average. Despite these ostensible shortages, many experts attest that outcomes between both nations are comparable.
"There is considerable room for growth across all nations large and small, developing and First World when it comes to healthcare quality and outcomes improvement," said Dr. V.K. Singh, past chairman of the Healthcare Division of the Quality Council of India (QCI), who first joined forces with Simpler Consulting in early 2012 to provide accredited Lean management training to the Health Division of QCI.
"The United States and others can learn from developing countries like India that have leveraged management innovation to optimize low resources to meet high demand for care," Dr. Singh said. "We wrote Innovations in Healthcare Management to serve as a resourceful guide to advise readers on ways to apply innovation to eliminating waste and achieving the most efficient healthcare processes, while also cutting costs and improving care delivery."
Using examples from the Indian healthcare system, Innovations in Healthcare Management provides a dynamic compilation of experiences, best practices and analyses of trends from practitioners and acclaimed healthcare management pundits from India and the United States. Singh, Lillrank and the entire editorial team provide a series of case examples and lessons learned on the full spectrum of the health system – from supply chain to planning and design – providing a holistic glimpse into Lean healthcare management innovation.
"As our work in India has shown, the application of true management innovation can have a significant impact on healthcare delivery," said Paul Lillrank, co-author and Professor of Quality and Service Management, Aalto University (Finland). "My hope is that this book provides healthcare industry stakeholders with an accurate vision of the potential impact Lean healthcare management can have on healthcare innovation and delivery in both developing and First World countries across the globe."
