Tobacco use is the leading cause of disability, disease and preventable death. Smoking can increase the risk of poor eyesight, weakening sense of taste and smell, as well as affecting the central nervous system, respiratory system, cardiovascular system, digestive system and reproductive system. It can also cause terminal cancer related to head and neck, such as cancer of the lungs, oral cavity, throat and voice box to name a few. Smokeless tobacco products, such as spitting tobacco, dip, chew, snuff and snus, are also harmful for health and are not a safer alternative to smoking. It could lead to oral cancers such as cancer of the esophagus, cancer of the throat, voice box and pancreatic cancer.
According to Dr. Vikram Kekatpure - Senior Consultant - Head and Neck Oncology at Narayana Health City, Bangalore, "The most common reason for people to take to tobacco is peer pressure. Youngsters, especially teenagers take to this habit in order to fit-in or win admiration; once they are hooked, it is very difficult to stop unless they want to quit. The average age of tobacco initiation is less than 18-years and counselling for these youngsters is vital. Government should stringently implement the ban on tobacco products near schools and colleges, with heavy penalties for underage selling."
Prior to the launch of digital campaign, Narayana Health Network in Kolkata in association with Indian Dental Association organized a session where oral cancer survivors shared their experience. A rally to create awareness about the ill effects of Tobacco was also flagged off by Hon. Dr. Chandrima Bhattacharya, Minister of State, Health & Family Welfare of West Bengal. Thousands of people participated in the awareness campaign, which included oncologists, dentists, medical students, celebrities, dignitaries and people from all walks of life.
The online campaign launched by Narayana Health aims to remind people that life is precious and there are several reasons to live longer.
