'Major S Nanjundiah and Shanta Nanjundiah Cancer Centre' was inaugurated at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital in Mysore by Nobel Laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus, Chairman of Yunus Centre and Founder of Grameen Bank, Dhaka, Bangladesh. His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji of Srikshethra, Sutturu graced the occasion in the presence of Dr. Devi Shetty, Chairman - Narayana Health. With a built-up area of 30,000 sq. ft., the Cancer Center will provide high quality services for early detection, prevention and treatment of all types of cancers covering medical, surgical and radiation oncology services. It has a Linear Accelerator capable of treating 90% of the prevalent cancers. Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant services will be linked to Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center at Narayana Health City in Bangalore.

With the commencement of the Cancer Unit at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, people living in and around Mysore district now have access to quality and affordable cancer screening and treatment facilities closer home. The centre will reach out to over 60% of people from the weaker sections of society in and around Mysore through various community initiatives.
Cancer has become very rampant in India in the recent past. There are estimated 25 lakh cancer patients in India, out of which 1.4 lakh are in Karnataka alone and are estimated to increase at the rate of 35,000 patients a year. In the past few months, Narayana Multispeciality Hospital had organized mobile breast cancer screening camps, hematology clinic as well as surveillance programs for head and neck cancer awareness and screening. According to cancer specialists, head and neck cancer is the most prevalent apart from gastrointestinal, cervical and breast cancer that are commonly seen in this region.
