As part of the infrastructure development for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, a resettlement programme moved a large number of city residents living in slums from locations in the city to agricultural market towns in Bawana and Narela.
Despite the substantial infrastructure investment of more than $US6 billion - which helped to transform Delhi in time for the delivery of the Games - the residents that were moved under the resettlement programme to Bawana and Narela still suffer from poor living conditions and unfit housing and sanitation.
Mace Group has helped to deliver some of the world's largest sporting events, including the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Today, it continues to deliver project management and cost management support for international sporting events, and works with the London Legacy Development Company to ensure continuing delivery of the legacy of the London 2012 Games.
In order to better understand the legacy of the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games Mace's India office partnered with Habitat for Humanity - a leading global non-profit housing organisation - to help to build new housing for residents of Bawana.
A team of 22 from Mace Group volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in the first week of April. Helping with tasks like breaking up bricks and hauling construction materials, the team helped to construct two homes for residents who had been moved under the resettlement programme.
Mace intends to continue to work with Habitat for Humanity to contribute to the health and hygiene of residents of Bawana and Narela by participating in the non-profit's 'Sensitise to Sanitise' campaign.
Stuart Robinson, Mace's Country Manager for India, said, "As a company that is involved closely with the delivery of infrastructure and global sporting events like the Commonwealth and Olympic Games, it is important that we act as a responsible business and learn more about the less positive aspects that the legacy of these events can leave."
"Working on the ground with Habitat for Humanity to help to build houses for the disadvantaged residents of Bawana was an eye-opening experience that has helped me to better understand the conditions that many people suffer in Delhi," said Stuart.
He added, "Habitat for Humanity is a fantastic organisation making a real difference in India, and one that we plan to continue to support in the future."
Rajan Samuel, Managing Director, Habitat for Humanity India, said, "No matter who we are or where we come from, we all deserve to have a decent life. At Habitat for Humanity, this is what unites us. Our work is aligned with the Government of India's flagship programme of Housing for All and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan."
"Having a decent home is foundational for improving a family's opportunity for health, education and economic well-being. We are thankful to the Mace Group for helping us build a better life for the families in Bawana. We look forward to their continued support as we set out to build a world where everyone has a decent place to live," he added.
