The Ambassador of Gambia to India, Mr. Dembo M. Badjie, delivered an insightful lecture on ''India-Africa Relations in the 21st Century'' at the O.P. Jindal Global University. The forum was organized by the university's school of international affairs as part of its diplomatic series program.

Speaking at the forum, Dr. Sreeram Chaulia, Dean, Jindal School of International Affairs, said, "We share a close association with Africa. A partnership anchored in the principles of equality, respect and mutual benefit and have a great ambition to strengthen these ties and develop a new paradigm of cooperation."
"Prime Minister, Narendra Modi's trip to the African continent this summer, is expected to further strengthen our relationship," he noted.
"India and Africa have come a long way in history as a result of the efforts of our founding fathers," said, His Excellency Mr. Dembo M. Badjie, Ambassador of Gambia to India, while delivering the public lecture.
"Honorable Mahatma Gandhi struggled for 20 years against the apartheid system during his stay in South Africa and his efforts paved the way for freedom of equality, justice, and eventual independence in the region," noted, His Excellency.
"India-Africa have continuously supported each other in international relations, economic and social development issues. Our relationship has now developed into a strong model of south-south cooperation," he added.
South-South cooperation is a broad framework for collaboration among countries of the South in the political, economic, social, cultural, environmental and technical domains.
H. E. Mr. Dembo M. Badjie, also spoke on the India Africa Forum Summit (IAFS), and hailed it as a landmark initiative to improve partnership and cooperation.
India has announced credit of $10 billion over a period of five years and a grant assistance worth $600 million to Africa at the recently concluded IAFS 2015. India has also announced 50,000 scholarships to African students to pursue their studies in India.
Speaking on the relationship in the international arena, ambassador Badjie, said, both India-Africa have always been highly supportive of each other and cited the example of the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris.
He said, "Africa had given full support to India among other countries to set up the first of its kind International Solar Alliance (ISA), a conglomeration of research institutions, energy firms and governments of 120 nations in the country."
He further said that Africa is committed to supporting India's bid for permanent seat in United Nations Security Council.
"Our relations have grown from strength to strength and India and Africa are inextricably linked by history, vision and shared values," noted, His Excellency.
India was also amongst the first countries that came to the aid of the African Union when it was hit by the Ebola crisis.
H.E. Dembo M. Badjie was redeployed as The Gambia High Commissioner to India and Ambassador to Bangladesh and designate to Myanmar. His Jurisdiction has now been increased to cover countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Cambodia, Nepal, Singapore and Brunei.
