Inventions in the World of Sustainability
JD Annual Design Awards is an annual graduate fashion show, a much-awaited event that acts as a mirror to the latest trends and themes in fashion. Two years ago, the theme was Pure, an idea that inspired students to think out of the box. Last year, the theme was Untold Stories, an exhortation to students to explore and celebrate the hidden stories behind many beautiful art forms. This year, once again, JD Institute of Fashion Technology has its finger on the pulse of a new wave in fashion with its dramatic, awe-inspiring 2017 theme: Future Origins.

Future Origins is, as the name suggests, interested in the origins of a new future. Rapid urbanization, blatant consumerism and continued exploitation of people and natural resources for profit, has caused many in both developed and developing countries to question the capitalist lifestyles we have taken for granted as the culmination of progress. If this is progress indeed, then it seems to be cluttered, wasteful and frequently unethical. Is there a better way to live? Is there a better future we can envision and leave behind for the next generation? JD's answer is yes. And Future Origins is a return-to-roots manifesto for that future. It telescopes into three relevant and powerful ideas to make that new future possible: Innovation, Sustainability, and Ethics.
While talking about invention, is it possible to create garments out of cigarette butt? The designers from the Diploma Batch of Fashion and Apparel Design created a fashion line by using filters from the cigarette butt. The butt was sterilized and the filters were removed and cleaned with a solvent. "The idea was to create a fashion line that is ethical and sustainable. Inspired by the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan campaign, we tried to generate a fabric from solid waste," says Anupama Shet, Radhika Rao and Meghana Maligi.
Young blooming designers from the B.Sc Batch of Fashion and Apparel Design, Bina Sridhar and Saranya Shalini have used algae as a pigment to dye the garments in their collection. Algae is a bio-degradable component and has the ability to change colour when exposed to renewable natural elements such as heat and water. The collection amalgamates the inspiration of aerial photography of David Maisel and the microbial symmetry of the algae.
True innovation, JD Institute suggests, is not about creating another mainstream gimmick to capture 'likes' and share of market. It's about creating something genuinely necessary and previously unexplored. JD exhorts students, professionals and the industry at large to view innovation in fashion and design as a roadmap to change and growth, not as a shortcut to quick and convenient profit. The second pillar is Sustainability. Are we creating design and fashion in ways that enable industry and society to thrive tomorrow, or choke? JD's and the view of every thinking segment of society is, No, we are not. So the answer lies in being mindful of what we design, what we use to design it, and how. And the third and final pillar of Future Origins is ethics. Too often, large design and fashion corporations, rely on cheap labour hunkering down in poor conditions to help the big brands ply their cutting-edge, expensive products. But fashion without a conscience is no fashion at all. JD Institute of Fashion Technology advocates design that respects human rights and dignity. That gives workers and artists their due, their piece of the pie.
Is it truly innovative? Is it sustainable? Is it ethical? The design vision that manages to straddle all those three questions is the design vision of the future. Inspired by this manifesto, JD's final-year students have imagined and crafted more than 50 collections. Each collection is undergirded by immense research into concepts, fabrics, communities and crafts that paves the way for real innovation that's sustainable and ethical. The collections will be judged by a jury of fashion and design leaders. The event will be attended by the who's who of Bangalore. What more relevant, exciting fashion event should occupy imaginations this season?
Relevance. Excitement. Staying in the game. All this is not new for JD Institute of Fashion Technology. Every year, the school revisits and expands its curriculum to help its students be fluent in the latest theories and techniques of design. By hiring young, visionary people as faculty, JD infuses new ideas and boldness into the system. Recent partnerships with global creative institutions in Italy and Russia have expanded the horizons of students. Last year, the students of the JDIDS program, an international-standard haute couture program in collaboration with KOEFIA, Italy, offered students a ground-breaking learning experience. Students got the opportunity to travel to Italy to understand and experience haute couture fashion first hand from one of Europe's oldest haute couture schools. They understood how the culture and traditions of Italy have always informed its fashion aesthetic. For their mentor, they had haute couture designer, Sergio Milioni, who guided them in the creation of a rare and interesting high fashion collection: the marriage of Italian technique with traditional Indian fabrics. But most of all, students learnt that the essence of haute couture or high fashion was not just sophistication; what wins the day is good old fashioned passion, patience and persistence, and a thorough schooling in history, technique and craft. It's no wonder JD is able to place its students every year in the highest places in design and fashion. Just look at the alumni and their achievements to see how JD products always blaze a trail, wherever they go.
This culture of success, of bold and original thinking, and fresh experience is what JD Institute, once again, offers to students and parents in 2017 at the dawn of a new academic year. Admissions are open to a plethora of courses that covers the full spectrum of design: fashion design, textile design, interior design, jewellery design, hair and make-up artistry, event management, fashion photography, fashion communication, and visual merchandising. Does this inspire you to strive to create a difference and unpack the origins of a new future in design and fashion? JD Institute of Fashion Technology is the place to be.
