Mr. Paltu Bera, in 2010, developed heart problems when he was working in Mumbai with a goldsmith. He had difficulty in breathing and was not able to work. Then, he moved to Hoogly district in West Bengal and was taking treatment over there. With time, his condition worsened as he was suffering from heart failure and was not given much hope. Through one of his well wishers in Ramakrishna Mission, Kolkata, he came to BGS Global Hospitals, for a second opinion. He was evaluated, diagnosed with end stage heart failure and was also not medically fit to undergo heart transplantation as his pulmonary artery pressure was high and was put on medications. After a month, he came to the hospital and underwent cardiac cathertization, which confirmed he was a suitable candidate for heart transplantation and was registered with ZCCK, for the organ. On January 3rd, 2015, the organ was allocated by ZCCK (Zonal Coordination Committee for Karnataka) as they were found to be a suitable match. He successfully underwent heart transplantation and is currently doing well.
Heart Failure:
Heart failure (HF), often used to mean chronic heart failure (CHF), occurs when the heart is unable to pump sufficiently to maintain blood flow to meet the needs of the body. The terms congestive heart failure (CHF) or congestive cardiac failure (CCF) are often used interchangeably with chronic heart failure. Signs and symptoms commonly include shortness of breath, excessive tiredness, and leg swelling. The shortness of breath is usually worse with exercise, when lying down, and at night while sleeping. There is often a limitation on the amount of exercise people can perform, even when well treated.
Common causes of heart failure include coronary artery disease including a previous myocardial infarction (heart attack), high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, valvular heart disease and cardiomyopathy. These cause heart failure by changing either the structure or the functioning of the heart.
Mr. Paltu Bera, Heart Transplant Survivor, said, "I had been on the waiting list for 2 months battling for my life with heart failure. I would like to thank the organ donors family and the cardiac surgeons, who have given me a second chance at life."
Dr. Anand Subrahmanyam, Senior Cardiac Surgeon, BGS Global Hospitals, said, "The incidence of heart failure is on the rise. Many of these patients are only offered medication, which is not very effective. These patients continue to suffer from failure, many of whom would not survive beyond six months to a year. Awareness needs to be raised regarding the effective surgical options of heart transplantation and LVADs (Left ventricular assist devices), which are available. These patients live a near normal life. Many young families would benefit from it. We have the capability to effectively perform these complex procedures with dedicated team of specialists."
Dr. Venkataramanaa N K, Vice Chairman and Chief Neurosurgeon, BGS Global Hospitals, said, "BGS Global Hospitals, has pioneered transplant program, over the last 7 years and is now heading towards creating state of the art multi organ transplant program in Karnataka. We have made a mark and enormous progress in Liver and Kidney Transplantation, successfully moving on to the heart and lung transplants. Our next initiative is to create a pancreas transplant program."
