Speaking on the occasion Mr. Ashok Bajpai, Managing Director, G4S India said, "We thank the organisers and all the participants who have taken time out from their busy schedule to make this event a great success. We are happy to associate with 'Tennis4Toilets', an initiative that supports the 'Swachh Bharat' campaign of the government of India."
The funds raised from the event will be used to make one entire Indian village 'open-defecation' free. Sulabh Sanitation Mission Foundation popularly known as Sulabh International has been roped in as the implementing agency as they are the pioneers in providing sanitation solutions to the poor. Ambassadors/Diplomats from countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chile, Guatemala and Serbia participated in the tournament.
"An idea just came while we were talking and enjoying tennis. It took us time, but now we are ready with 'Tennis4Toilets'. We want the participants to play tennis and help pay for ecological toilets," said the Serbian ambassador, Vladimir Maric. "The aim," he said, "was to raise enough money to make one entire Indian village 'open-defecation' free."
The initiative 'Tennis4Toilets' was conceived by the ambassadors. Apart from the diplomats and their administrative staff, local representatives from different organisations also participated in the tournament.
"Government alone cannot achieve the vision of 'Swachh Bharat' by 2019, so, all of us including the NGOs, people, corporates such as G4S who want to work with us have to come forward to build toilets, an important aspect of the campaign," said Pankaj Jain, Chairman, Sulabh International.
