Frost & Sullivan Commends the High Flexibility of HYDRA, MPDV's IIoT-enabled MES Platform for Discrete Industries
The HYDRA MES platform is production-ready to scale to any additional device and is backed by a robust server framework
MOUNTAIN VIEW, California, Oct. 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent analysis of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)-based Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) market for discrete manufacturing, Frost & Sullivan recognizes MPDV Mikrolab GmbH (MPDV) with the 2016 Global Award for Customer Value Leadership. MPDV's strategy of leveraging IIoT-based technology has resulted in the exclusive, service-oriented architecture (SOA)-based HYDRA MES platform, which can house the rising number of IIoT service functionalities to support the shop floor. It is proving to be a popular choice across discrete industries across the world.

Uniquely, MPDV's MES solution is server-centric, which makes it server-ready to be configured with any number of IIoT-based devices in the future. It can be integrated with new IIoT-enabled devices only by configuring the device's controlling and administering software at the server or at the cloud level.
"HYDRA has 20 modules and more than 300 different types of ready service functions and can accommodate more," said Frost & Sullivan Research Manager Muthuraman 'Ram' Ramasamy. "One of these service functionalities is its ability to effectively capture energy consumption information from the machines and energy utility systems to aid in energy optimization. This distinctive feature has given MPDV a competitive edge, particularly in the plastic molding industry."
HYDRA is also designed to effectively integrate with enterprise resource planning (ERP) modules, human resource data, and material and stock data of any particular part or process. It can handle data from quality inspection, tooling, and maintenance processes. The systems are Internet protocol (IP)-enabled and can automatically capture the process data of any sensor or machine control.
To simplify the integration of MES solutions, MPDV developed an exclusive standard interface between MES and machine manufacturers: the Universal Machine Connectivity for MES (UMCM). It acts as a sustainable plug-and-play connector, eliminating the need for facility studies and for programming the interfaces of machines of any vintage or make.
An outstandingly innovative feature of MPDV's solution is an edge gateway scenario, which provides an unmatched, continuous interface between the IT cloud and edge cloud. The gateway also acts as a barrier between them to protect the edge cloud from bandwidth- and hardware-related problems. It can also host security features to regulate the data flow between the IT cloud and private cloud. Data acquisition functionalities of HYDRA can be installed on the edge gateway providing real-time communication.
MPDV has also built a strong, IIoT-based hardware partner ecosystem, helping it optimize several production- and logistics-related solutions. For instance, it successfully employed the optical character recognition (OCR) systems in the metallurgy industry to identify hot objects from the furnace. The HYDRA platform is also capable of tracking movable assets within the factory and has built-in escalation management and alert engine modules.
"MPDV, through its HYDRA platform, has been able to guide customers toward higher production efficiencies and enhanced energy management," noted Ramasamy. "These, along with its ability to gather different types of data, analyze it in context of the situation and drive action continue to drive market adoption."
