Frost & Sullivan Applauds Movimento for its Pioneering OTA Solutions that Seamlessly Secure, Monitor and Manage the Software-Defined Cars of Today
Movimento's OTA platform can easily integrate with existing and future vehicles, and will allow automotive OEMs to enhance customer satisfaction, reduce recall spend and offer new features/functionalities
MOUNTAIN VIEW, California, March 29, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent analysis of the over-the-air (OTA) market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Movimento with the 2016 North American Frost & Sullivan Award for Enabling Technology Leadership. Software-defined cars are the essence of the connected car future, and Movimento has uniquely positioned itself in the automotive industry by providing software management across the entire life cycle of the vehicle.
"The proliferation of sensors and electronic control units (ECUs) in cars requires original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to update vehicle software seamlessly. OTA updates are the perfect delivery platform for this and enable higher vehicle security and customer satisfaction, as well as reduced warranty spending," said Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Ramnath Eswaravadivoo. "Further, the race toward autonomous cars will make OTA critical to facilitate self-learning and prescriptive diagnostics. For now, OEMs want solutions that can also update software in cars that lack embedded connectivity."
Movimento's proven and tested OTA platform can easily integrate with existing and future vehicles across different operating systems (OS), with no re-designing required. The company engages with OEMs at the early stages of a car assembly line, keeping a record of the vehicle's ECUs and its hardware and software lifecycle through an embedded OTA agent and/or OTA-enabled advanced gateway for vehicles without embedded connectivity. This gateway is physically connected to the on-board diagnostics (OBD)-II module, which, in turn, connects to a secured cloud server. In 2015, Movimento updated more than 3 million vehicles across both software and firmware including more than 12 million ECUs. Movimento's car manufacturer customers include GM, FCA and Volvo plus a wide range of Tier-1 suppliers including ZF, Bosch, Denso, Panasonic, Continental, Delphi, Visteon, Magna and others.
"Movimento works with car manufacturers and Tier-1 suppliers at every stage of the car life cycle from engineering and early production to embedded OTA and retroactive software update solutions for cars already on the road," said Mahbubul Alam, CTO, Movimento. "We are also building an ecosystem of partners with best-in-breed technologies incorporating them into our OTA platform so, OEMs and Tier-1s can benefit from best practices in other industries including security, big data analytics and mobile device updates."
"With access to the vehicle's software- and ECU-related information, Movimento's platform offers situational or just-in-time software updates," explained Eswaravadivoo. "This innovative solution has gained traction among North American automotive OEMs and Tier-I suppliers, garnering Movimento partnerships with GM, FCA and Volvo among others."
Movimento's OTA is designed around a red-black security architecture. The black side of the vehicle software architecture deals with non-critical issues, including infotainment, external connectivity and its related OS. The red side controls safety-related or mission-critical issues. Movimento has a firm foot in updating the red-side architecture and has now begun to update the black side as well.
The company also enables updates through smartphones for vehicles that do not have embedded connectivity. Movimento's application can be integrated as a white-label solution with the OEM mobile app in order to download the latest software from the servers. The phone is then connected to the car through Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or USB. This model and vehicle with embedded OTA from the factory are expected to be commercialized by 2018 in North America, China and other global markets.
To add value to its offering, Movimento follows a "Crawl, Walk, and Run" strategy while deploying OTA updates. It first works with the OEM to update, analyze, and experiment with new software updates on test vehicles and pushes the software to customers only when the OEM's trial-run results are positive. Movimento simultaneously collects data from the cars before the update and stores it in its automotive intelligent engine (AIE), which is located in the cloud or in the OEM's data center. The AIE can analyze and resolve the difference between collected and stored data to decide which vehicle requires what update.
"When the AIE finds a mismatch or tweaked software in a vehicle that was completed by aftermarket service providers, the system automatically flags it, sending information to the OEM and the dealer, helping the OEM avoid the specific vehicle from warranty," noted Eswaravadivoo. "Further, the AIE resides in the data center of the OEM or is hosted in a secure, scalable and global cloud platform, thus offering OEMs the independence to update the system themselves."
In recognition of its relentless dedication to address customers' needs while maintaining quality, reliability and security, Movimento is the worthy recipient of the 2016 Frost & Sullivan Enabling Technology Leadership Award. Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to a company that has developed a pioneering technology that not only enhances current products, but also enables the development of new products and applications. The award recognizes the high market acceptance potential of the recipient's technology.
