Dr. Sharma is the Vice Chairman of Lupin Limited since 2013. He joined the company for a second stint in 2003 as its Managing Director and has overseen the rise of Lupin from Rs. 1120 crore business then to Rs. 13702 crore reported in fiscal 2016, with 72% in revenues from its international operations in 76 countries.
SPJIMR said Dr. Sharma would teach and mentor participants of the FMB programme and also help guide the Centre for FMB as it works to expand its canvas of offerings to serve more family businesses across India. SPJIMR's FMB programme stands out as the oldest, longest running and internationally accredited programme for family businesses, which power the bulk of the Indian economy. SPJIMR's FMB is accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA), UK.
Dr. Sharma teaches FMB participants in the areas of leadership, organisational behaviour, relationship management, emotional intelligence, values and ethics, among others.
He brings to SPJIMR's FMB a unique blend of experience in understanding family businesses in an Indian context, high personal academic achievement, academic teaching experience across leading schools and leadership in a cutting-edge business that uses high technology - all of it combined with a value and purpose-driven approach to delivering superior performance.
Dr. Sharma said, "SPJIMR is not just the body and the flesh, there is a soul in this place. There is a purpose steeped in Indian values. That really appeals to me a lot. I am also a great admirer of Indian talent. I haven't done anything other than getting the best of the people, sharing with them the purpose and getting the best out of them. We are in an institute where similar experience sharing and learning can be done. I hope I will be able to contribute to it in every way that I can. I am in giving mode here."
SPJIMR Dean, Dr. Ranjan Banerjee said, "I believe the entry of people like Dr. Kamal Sharma and Mr. R Gopalakrishnan (also Executive-in-Residence at SPJIMR) is a big step forward for the Institute. We have faculty who are in touch with practice. We are now bringing in global senior leaders with decades of industry experience who share our values and are helping our faculty build a deeper understanding of practice, and are giving our students the benefit of years of experience and years of handling complexity in a variety of business situations."
"As we move forward, we will look at launching an advanced management programme for senior FMB participants and some of our senior alumni. We believe that Dr. Sharma's engagement will be very useful in sharpening that programme and making it relevant to Indian business families of today and tomorrow," Dr. Banerjee added.
On his current role at SPJIMR, Dr. Sharma said, "In FMB, my endeavour is to see that young students who come to the programme get the right direction. Having a rich experience in working with Indian businesses, having interacted with the founders, learning about their passion, I think it is my desire that young boys and girls should inculcate a sense of purpose. I think we should define the purpose which in turn should dictate the action independent of turnovers and profits. And in doing so, they should be able to think that they are capable of making their businesses probably ten times better than they currently are."
