As a President who valued knowledge and reason above all, who brought to the fore issues of development and education, and most importantly as a teacher and a humanist, Dr. Kalam was a role model and the common man's hero. The People's President: A.P.J. Abdul Kalam demonstrates this through Dr. Kalam's interactions with legislators, dignitaries, students, media and well-wishers through anecdotes, interactions, stories and photographs. With this book, SM Khan has tried to capture the intimate relationship he shared with Dr. Kalam and give readers a glimpse into Dr. Kalam's presidency and post-presidency days.
In the foreword of this book, Dr. Kalam's brother A.P.J.M. Maraikayar says, "This book presents some unique facts about Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam as a people's president, an integrator, a scientist, a colleague, a friend, a guide and a common man… I am sure this book will continue to inspire many young minds to learn, adapt, carve their own future of learning from the life of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam."
The author, SM Khan, adds, "I met the Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi… he said 'Kalam Saheb per kuchh likhiye' (Write something on Dr. Kalam). His words were very inspiring and I thought that my best tribute to Dr. Kalam would be to write a book on him."
This memoir also reveals little known facts from his life such as:
- Dr. Kalam started the practice of the President paying tribute to jawans at Amar Jawan Jyoti, India Gate on 15th August.
- He was particular about having the same set of chairs on the dias, whenever he was attending a function. 'The earlier practice' of having a bigger chair for Rashtrapati was made redundant by him.
- Dr. Kalam told the author during his last meeting with him on 24th July, 2015, 'Prime Minister Modi is a performer; he should be allowed to perform'.
The book sheds light on his continued efforts to work for the betterment of humanity post his presidency, his views on the then-current brand of politics in the country, and his last days.
