Every year October 29th, 2014, globally is observed as World Stroke Day and to create awareness on stroke, a week-long exhibition is organized at the hospital premises for the public to learn about brain attack (stroke) and the modern methods of diagnosis and treatment in stroke patients. Specimens of brain were displayed for the public affected by stroke and a platform was created for the public to carry out a self online stroke risk evaluation, by logging on to www.bgsgin.in. The stroke exhibition was inaugurated by Dr. P Bore Gowda, Executive Director, Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust, Government of Karnataka.
Brain Attack (stroke), according to community based surveys, affects 119/1,00,000 population in India and 15 to 30% of stroke victims are young adults in the age group of 15 to 45 years.
Sri Om Prakash, Director General of Police and Director General of Fire & Emergency Services, Karnataka, said, "I'm fascinated to see the new technology, Neurosonology, where we can study the pattern of blood flow in the brain and I understand it is a simple non-invasive tool in detecting the clots."
Dr. P Bore Gowda, Executive Director, Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust, Government of Karnataka, said, "I'm happy to inaugurate the exhibition on stroke. The public should be educated, which helps in early detection or prevent future risk. The new stroke registry will help in creating a demographic incidence of the disease."
Dr. Venkataramanaa N K, Vice Chairman & Chief Neurosurgeon, BGS Global Hospitals, said, "Accessibility to advanced technologies is helping in deliver superior clinical outcomes. State-of-the-art Neurosonology is a point of care ultrasonography, performed to obtain real images in the brain, thus allowing findings to be co-related with the patients presenting signs and symptoms. The incidence of stroke (brain attack) is on the rise. Changing habits and sedentary lifestyles have made the incidence of strokes more prevalent among Indians. We are creating awareness and educating public on stroke. Today, people can do their stroke risk evaluation online and also we are launching a stroke registry to look at various demographic factors that influence stroke in this region."
Dr. Lokesh B, Consultant, Neurologist, BGS Global Hospitals, said, "Neurosonology is a point of care ultrasonography performed at bedside. It includes carotid vertebral doppler and transcranial doppler. By this technique the blood supply to the brain can be obtained in real time continuously. Also early fat deposit within the blood vessel (atherosclerosis) can be determined. This tool is useful for both primary and secondary prevention of stroke."
Neurosonology: Neurosonology includes carotid vertebral Doppler, Transcranial Doppler, and Peripheral nerve and Muscle sonography.
Transcranial Doppler: Novel technology also called as doctors' stethoscope of the Brain. It complements Brain MRI/CT Angio by providing information on blood flow velocities, collateral flow and emboli in intracranial cerebral vessels.
Carotid Vertebral Doppler: Provides information about cerebral vessels in the neck. It is sensitive in picking up atherosclerotic changes in the vessels like IMT, Plaque and Stenosis. It is the only bedside technique that provides information on arterial wall.
