Non GM seeds/Hybrids hold the largest market share, followed by GM seeds and varietal seeds. The GM seed market is projected to increase steadily, as many countries are starting to accept the GM technology. The seed industry has a higher concentration in industrialized and developed countries, North America and Europe constitute nearly half of the market. America dominates the GM market followed by Asia. Asia-Pacific is the second largest and the fastest growing seed market. China is the second biggest seed market in the world, only falling behind the United States.
Industry players in the seeds market focus on merging and acquiring smaller organizations to increase their consumer base and improve their expertise. Last year alone the top six agricultural organizations were on the verge of merging into three entities. Dow Chemical and DuPont have agreed to merge, China National Chemical Corp. purchased Syngenta, a Swiss chemical and seeds company, for USD 43 billion. The latest purchase of Monsanto by Bayer (pending regulatory) for a USD 66 billion will result in latter becoming the world's largest seed and agriculture company.
