App Annie's Retrospective Marks 2015 as a Banner Year of Growth for India
India's ridesharing and m-commerce apps saw a remarkable surge in usage
BENGALURU, India, Jan. 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Today App Annie, the largest mobile app data and insights platform, released its third annual Retrospective on 2015's largest app trends, which defines the most relevant changes throughout the year for app businesses around the globe. The report identifies key drivers of platform growth across iOS and Google Play, market sectors and new frontiers that will broaden the horizon for apps.
Some of the key trends from the report are:
- India showed great growth potential in emerging markets: 1.5x jump in combined iOS and Google Play downloads from 2014 to 2015.
- India was among the key contributors of Google Play's significant increase in worldwide downloads; Google Play led nearly 100% more downloads over iOS whereas iOS widened revenue lead.
- Active users for ridesharing and taxi apps surged in India; over 25% of smartphone users actively used at least one major taxi or ridesharing app in Q4 2015, ahead of the US and South Korea.
- India's e-commerce market has rapidly shifted towards mobile; 75% of Flipkart's traffic was driven by its mobile apps and Myntra generated 90% of its traffic from its mobile apps prior to switching to an app-only approach.
The report points out that the impact of emerging markets on Google Play's download charts has significantly changed the structure of the market and consequently, the efficacy of existing revenue models. This trend opens up the possibility of localized market leadership or region-specific revenue models, and poses unique challenges and opportunities for both local and global players in the app economy.
