Xinhua Silk Road: E. China's Zaozhuang city to embrace walnuts, chestnut harvest
BEIJING, Sept. 27, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The crop fruit that fell all over the ground heralded a bountiful harvest of walnuts and chestnuts this year in Huangshanjian Village of Zaozhuang City in east China's Shandong Province.
Huangshanjian Village is located in the west of Mountain Guishan Scenic Area, upstream of Zhoucun Reservoir, the source of drinking water in Zaozhuang City. The village is surrounded by mountains on three sides, and vegetation coverage here exceeds 97 percent, and the content of negative oxygen ions in the air is extremely high, making it a natural oxygen bar.
It is learned that Huangshanjian Village has a history of more than 1400 years since Tang Dynasty, and most of area of the village belongs to hilly terrain, which is very suitable for chestnut growth.
Since the 1990s, villagers in Huangshanjian Village began to grow chestnuts on a large scale. The superior geographical location and natural conditions make chestnut fruits grown in Huangshanjian Village of excellent quality. The village has planted more than 2,000 mu (about 133 hectares) of chestnuts, with an annual output of more than 1,000 tonnes of chestnuts, and through the cultivation of chestnuts, the majority of villagers have achieved increased income.
