2nd Kubuqi Award Open for Registration: Let Students Build a Sustainable Desert, Awakening Youth's Attention to Environmental Issues
HONG KONG, Sept. 11, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- To raise awareness of global climate issues and sustainable environmental solutions among secondary school students and university students, Elion Foundation and Treelion Foundation are organizing the 2nd Kubuqi Award. This initiative inspires youngsters to address ecological and sustainability challenges in the desert while empowering them to showcase their understanding of cutting-edge technologies and sustainable solutions. Winning teams will be awarded scholarships, certificates, and a unique opportunity to visit the Kubuqi Desert for free!
"We hope that, through this competition, students can contribute to desert governance and sustainable development at both the global and national levels, while we provide them with opportunities and nurture them to become future leaders in ecological conservation and new sustainable development," Mr. Plato Yip, Director of Elion Foundation, stated and wished that participants can benefit significantly from the competition.
The competition is now open for registration, with a deadline set for October 31, 2023. Interested students are welcome to sign up and participate.
The Kubuqi Award Received an Enthusiastic Response
The First Kubuqi Award has seen hugely positive student response and has been overwhelmed with outstanding submissions. Over 60 short video entries were submitted by secondary school students, in which seven entries were submitted by the same school, demonstrating a highly active engagement.
94 university applications and over 60 proposals were submitted. Participating teams comprised students from diverse disciplines, including medicine, music, law, pharmacy, and finance, extending the competition's reach across different academic fields.
Students from Munsang College (H.K Island), True Light Girls' College, and YPICA Lee Lim Ming College demonstrated their exceptional talents and won the top three of the Secondary School - "Talk About Desertification" Short Film Competition.
For the University - Desertification Control Entrepreneurship Competition, teams of students from the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Technological and Higher Education Institute Of Hong Kong(Thei), Hong Kong Baptist University, and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology secured the top three honours and scholarships.

Supported by the Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs of the LOCPG, the Education Bureau and InvestHK, co-organized by Friends of the Earth (HK) and the GBA Economic and Trade Association, the Kubuqi Award has invited a panel of professional judges from various fields to determine the finalists and the winning teams.
The 2nd Kubuqi Award: "Speak Sustainability" Secondary School Short Video Contest and International Desert Sustainable Development Proposal Competition are open for secondary school students and university applicants respectively.
Raising Awareness through Short Films
The "Speak Sustainability" Secondary School Short Video Contest invites teams of 2 to 4 secondary school students from the same school, nominated by a teacher. Multiple teams from the same school are allowed to join and compete.
The participating team will film a 1.5-minute short video addressing one of the following environmental-related topics: Energy and Climate Change, Atmospheric Pollution and Air Quality, Water Resources and Conservation, or Biodiversity and Nature Conservation. Academic judges will screen the submitted entries and 15 shortlisted videos will be uploaded onto the Kubuqi Award official website for public voting to determine the final winners.
Proposal for Green Development in Deserts
The International Desert Sustainable Development Proposal Competition is divided into local and international university groups, radiating the coverage of the competition from Hong Kong to worldwide. Participating teams must consist of 2 to 4 full-time undergraduates and postgraduates. Team members can be from different institutes, faculties, grades, and disciplines.
Proposal submissions shall be based on the following themes: Desert Zero Carbon New Town Design, Desert Ecotourism Business, Sustainable Utilization of Desert Energy and Water Resources, or Desert Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration. Students will propose an innovative and feasible desert sustainable development plan to propose resolutions for the ongoing desertification problems in the desert and address global carbon neutrality policy goals.
Expert judges will conduct online evaluations and select the finalists. Finalist teams will have the valuable opportunity to participate in a mentorship program, where they will receive expert guidance to refine their proposals. After the final submission, the local and international teams will participate in online or offline work presentations, where the judging panel will conduct live scoring. Winners will be announced before the awards ceremony.
