ZappRx Adopts Point-of-Care Partners ePrescribing Regulatory Tracker
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla., Nov. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- ZappRx, a digital health services company that is modernizing and simplifying the way specialty medications are managed, has selected Point-of-Care Partners' ePrescribing State Law Review to help the company stay abreast of the ever-changing regulatory landscape.
Specialty medications are expected to account for half of all drug costs by 2018, but the fulfillment process is particularly complex and time consuming for physicians, pharmacists and the patients who need them most. Nearly 57 million people struggle to get specialty medications on time due to inefficiencies in the process. ZappRx is automating specialty drug workflow and connecting key stakeholders to reduce administrative burden and increase speed to therapy.
In addition to DEA rules, each state has unique regulations governing how prescriptions are written and delivered. This creates a complex web of rules technology vendors must follow in order to be compliant. With the ePrescribing State Law Review, Point-of-Care Partners does the tedious work of weeding through copious statutes and regulations to find what is relevant for prescribing applications, and provides an easy-to-read, summarized table of rules.
Key ePrescribing Compliance Variances by State
- Most states specify unique formatting criteria and varied signature requirements for printed and faxed prescriptions.
- Some states require ePrescribing solutions to be approved prior to use in their state.
- Many states classify controlled substances differently than the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
- Increasingly, states are requiring prescribers to check the Prescription Drug Monitoring Database prior to writing a new prescription for controlled substances or other designated drugs of concern.
- Many states limit prescribing of physician assistants and advanced nurse practitioners and require additional information on their prescriptions.
- In New York, prescribers must fully transition to electronic prescribing by March 27, 2016 or face penalties under the I-STOP Law.
"It takes an average of 3-6 weeks for a patient to receive their specialty medication after it is prescribed. ZappRx solutions allow patients, physicians, and pharmacists to work together to improve patients' access to treatment and deliver medicine faster through technologies such as ePrescribing," said Zoe Barry, Founder and CEO, ZappRx. "We will be using the ePrescribing State Law Review to better prepare for new mandates as we help our clients get ready for an influx of new specialty medications and improved technologies for delivering those medications."
Point-of-Care Partners' ePrescribing State Law Review is a succinct yet comprehensive data set that provides subscribers access to a regularly updated analysis of state and federal rules governing electronic prescriptions as well as access to regulatory experts who can assist with questions and issues that might cause pharmacies to reject electronic prescriptions, or create tensions between them and their provider customers.
"The regulatory landscape for ePrescribing is extremely complex and the scope of what needs to be tracked can be overwhelming. ePrescribing of specialty medications is ready to take off. We look forward to simplifying regulatory compliance for ZappRx and its customers," said Tony Schueth, Point-of-Care Partners' CEO and managing partner.
