BEIJING, March 24, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- During the "ICANN China Day" event held earlier this week in Beijing, .XIN, a new domain name suffix, has been acknowledged by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, or MIIT, as an approved new generic top-level domain (new gTLD) for Chinese netizens.
"It is definitely an encouraging trend. Several new gTLD registries are also on track with their license applications," said Ching Chiao, the CEO of Brandma.co Limited who has been involved in the .XIN project since its inception and is an expert of the new gTLD market in China. .XIN is available for purchase through a few approved domain registrars, including Alicloud's (a.k.a. HiChina), the subsidiary of Alibaba Group that also runs the registry service for .XIN gTLD.
.XIN stands for "trust" or "new" in Chinese. It is next to "C-O-M" on the regular ASCII keyboard. Currently there are less than 20 new gTLDs that have been approved by the MIIT. Only the buyer of these approved domains, like "abc.xin" or "888.xin", are permitted to use the domain name for websites or email services in China.
.XIN uses Afilias as its back-end registry service provider(RSP). "A RSP must localize its core registry functions in order to meet MIIT's requirements," Ching emphasized.
