Worldwide Footprint of Women's Roller Derby Growing
International Championships Are Oct. 31-Nov. 2 in Nashville, TN
AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) prepares for its 9th annual championship tournament, the women's roller derby governing body is also marking a major milestone in its growth. On Oct. 1, the WFTDA welcomed its first apprentice league in South Africa, as well as new full member and apprentice leagues from around the world, setting the stage to soon have competitive WFTDA teams on all six inhabited continents.
"The WFTDA is excited to add another continent to our roster of international leagues. This is an exciting time for the international growth and accessibility of roller derby, and we expect this global development to continue," said WFTDA Executive Director Juliana Gonzales.
The international 2014 WFTDA Championships, which will be held Oct. 31-Nov. 2 in Nashville, Tennessee, reflect the significant international growth the WFTDA has experienced since accepting its first member league from outside the U.S. in 2009. This year, teams from five countries qualified for spots in the Division 1 and Division 2 championship brackets.
The Championships represent the best of the best of WFTDA teams. To qualify, teams had to first earn a ranking high enough to be seeded into one of the four Division 1 or two Division 2 Playoffs brackets. Then, they had to play their way to the top of the bracket to earn one of the coveted spots at Championships.
Tickets are on sale now for Championships weekend in Nashville, with weekend, single day and evening headliner game ticket options available. Additional information is available at wftda.com/championships. For the love of flat track. Be there!
