Wolverine Power Cooperative Commissions Alpine Power Plant
CADILLAC, Mich., June 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Wolverine Power Supply Cooperative, Inc. (Wolverine) is pleased to announce that the new Alpine Power Plant is now fully powered and capable of producing 410 megawatts (MW) of electricity, enough to power nearly 120,000 homes.
The Alpine Power Plant, located in Elmira, Michigan, is a natural gas-fired peaking plant featuring two state of the art, efficient, and clean simple cycle GE Frame 7F.05 combustion turbine generators. The Wolverine team successfully brought Unit 1 to full load (205 MW) on June 13, joining Unit 2, that reached full load during the last week of May. Final commissioning will continue in the weeks ahead, and once complete, the units are handed off to the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) for routine dispatch.
"I want to reiterate my praise for the Wolverine employees," stated Eric Baker, President and CEO of Wolverine. "Power plant chiefs, operators, engineers, and technicians across Wolverine's system contributed essential skills and knowledge to bring us this far. In addition, Wolverine's engineering and operations personnel offered vital commissioning support to hunt down and fix a number of typical commissioning nuisances, and to prepare the transmission network for start-up."
Alpine is the largest and most efficient generator in Michigan north of the Ludington-Midland line, including the Upper Peninsula. The addition of Alpine to Wolverine's generation fleet helps ensure Wolverine's ability to provide clean, reliable, and affordable power supply to its members for years to come. Alpine is also a vital resource for Michigan as it faces a projected capacity shortfall in the coming years.
