Winter Storms and Travel Insurance: Squaremouth Explains How to Get Coverage
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Feb. 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Winter Storm Marcus has been blamed for over 15,000 cancelled flights. Travelers who have already purchased a travel insurance policy may have some relief, but for those who waited, it is already too late. Squaremouth, America's fastest growing travel insurance comparison site, explains the best way to get coverage for a winter storm.
When to Purchase a Policy for Winter Storm Coverage
Winter Storm Marcus was the fourth named winter storm in the U.S. in the last two weeks. The date which a storm is named is extremely important in terms of travel insurance coverage. Once a storm is named, it becomes excluded on any travel insurance policy purchased after that date. This means any losses related to that storm, including costs related to cancelled or delayed flights, aren't covered.
"There is a lesson to be learned by the thousands of cancelled and delayed flights this season," said Squaremouth Director of Marketing, Megan Singh. "Coverage for weather is time-sensitive. If a traveler is specifically concerned with weather impacting their trip, we recommend purchasing a policy soon after their trip is booked. This will give them the best chance at getting the coverage they are looking for."
Travel Insurance Coverage for Winter Storm Marcus
On Friday, February 6th, The Weather Channel officially named Winter Storm Marcus. Travelers who purchased a policy before this date may be able to utilize travel insurance benefits, including Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption, for flights cancelled or delayed for long periods of time, as well as Travel Delay and Missed Connection, for flights delayed for shorter periods of time.
Unfortunately, those who waited to purchase a policy until February 6th, will not have coverage for any of Winter Storm Marcus' effects on their trip.
